Specialist service: This treatment is provided by Ms. Soudeh Chegini, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, who practises on-site at New Forest Family Dental.

About the treatment

Understanding oral discomfort.

Persistent or recurring oral discomfort - whether soreness, burning, sensitivity, or rawness - can significantly affect your daily life. Eating, speaking, and enjoying everyday activities become a challenge when your mouth is constantly uncomfortable.

The causes of oral discomfort are wide-ranging. They include conditions such as burning mouth syndrome, oral mucosal diseases, contact allergy, nutritional deficiencies, systemic conditions, and hormonal changes. An accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.

Ms. Soudeh Chegini takes a thorough, methodical approach to investigating oral discomfort - ruling out serious causes, identifying the underlying problem, and building a targeted management plan to help you feel better.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

What is burning mouth syndrome?

Burning mouth syndrome is a condition characterised by a persistent burning or scalding sensation in the mouth - typically the tongue, lips, palate, or gums - without any identifiable cause on examination. It can be difficult to treat but is manageable with the right approach.

Is oral discomfort serious?

In most cases, oral discomfort is not caused by anything sinister. However, it is important to have any persistent oral symptom assessed by a specialist, particularly if it lasts more than three weeks, to exclude any serious underlying condition.

What investigations might be needed?

Depending on the clinical picture, we may request blood tests (to check for anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid function), salivary flow assessment, patch testing for contact allergy, or a biopsy.

Can oral discomfort be cured?

This depends on the underlying cause. Many conditions causing oral discomfort are very amenable to treatment. Others, such as burning mouth syndrome, can be effectively managed even if not fully cured. We'll give you honest expectations based on your diagnosis.
